Things to Do in Campbell River, Vancouver Island: Our 3-Night Stay
Campbell River was one of the stops on our Vancouver Island road trip. During three nights here, we explored the surrounding nature. We visited in June and were lucky to have fantastic weather, which made it easy to spend our days outdoors.
We hiked Elk Falls Provincial Park and enjoyed forest scenery. A whale-watching tour followed. Campbell River delivered the experiences we seek: outdoor adventures, incredible wildlife, and exploration beyond top attractions.
Our whale-watching trip was particularly memorable. We saw orcas, humpback whales, porpoises, sea lions, eagles and bears. Experiencing such a variety of wildlife during our time in the area made Campbell River a highlight of our Vancouver Island itinerary.
In this guide, we’re sharing the activities we enjoyed during our three-night stay. Moreover, we share what to expect when visiting and why we think Campbell River deserves a place on your Vancouver Island road trip.

Is Campbell River Worth Visiting?
If you enjoy hiking, wildlife and spending time outdoors, Campbell River is well worth considering when planning a trip to Vancouver Island.
Located on the island’s east coast in British Columbia, the town offers access to forest trails, waterfalls, river canyons and coastal waters. What makes it particularly appealing is the variety of experiences you can combine during a single stay.
We spent time exploring Elk Falls Provincial Park, including the area around Elk Falls and the Canyon View Trail, after heading out on a whale-watching tour.
These experiences showed us two very different sides of the region. On land, we explored the forest and followed trails through the park. Out on the water, we had the opportunity to observe marine wildlife in its natural environment.
We stayed for three nights, which gave us enough time to enjoy our planned activities.
For travellers who prefer independent road trips and a balance of adventure and time to enjoy their surroundings, Campbell River is a destination worth adding to the itinerary.
One of the Best Things to Do in Campbell River: Elk Falls Provincial Park
Elk Falls Provincial Park is known for its waterfall, suspension bridge, forest trails and viewpoints overlooking the Campbell River canyon. It is a great place to spend time outdoors and explore the natural landscape surrounding the town.
We visited the park to do an easy hike after being a day out on the water.
Visit Elk Falls and the Suspension Bridge
Elk Falls is one of the park’s main attractions. The 25-metre waterfall drops into a rocky canyon surrounded by forest. On top of that the suspension bridge offers a view of the falls from above if you are not afraid of heights..
The walk to the bridge is relatively short, making it an easy addition to a day exploring Campbell River. If you have more time, there are additional trails and viewpoints to discover in the surrounding area.
Rather than visiting only the main viewpoint, we recommend allowing some extra time to explore more of the park.
Walk the Canyon View Trail
We also explored the Canyon View Trail, another walking option in Elk Falls Provincial Park.
This trail takes you along the Campbell River canyon and offers a different perspective on the landscape. While the suspension bridge is the obvious highlight for many visitors, the surrounding trail network gives you more opportunities to enjoy the forest and river scenery.
The Canyon View Loop is listed by BC Parks as a 4 km loop. If you want to explore beyond the main waterfall viewpoint, it is worth looking into this route when planning your visit.

LET’S TRAVEL TIP
We visited in June and almost had the canyon view trail to ourselves. The Elk Falls had a little more visitors who drove to the parking lot nearby. However, it was not crowded at all.
Explore More of the Park’s Trails
Elk Falls Provincial Park has several connected walking and hiking routes, so you can adapt your visit to the time you have available.
We explored Elk Falls, the Canyon View Trail and additional trails during our stay. If you enjoy spending time in the forest rather than rushing between viewpoints, it is worth setting aside a few hours for the park.
LET’S TRAVEL TIP
Check the current park map before setting off so you can choose a route that fits your plans. Trail conditions and access can change, so it is always worth checking the latest information from BC Parks.
Whale Watching: One of the Best Things to Do in Campbell River
Whale watching was the highlight of our stay in Campbell River. We particularly added Campbell River to our Canada itinerary because we wanted to experience an ethical whale watching tour. After researching for a while, we found the perfect fit in Campbell River and therefore, decided to add it to our road trip.
Vancouver Island is well known for its marine wildlife, and getting out onto the water offers a completely different way to experience the region. Instead of exploring the landscape on foot, you get to see the coastline from the sea and look for wildlife in the surrounding waters.
During our whale-watching trip, we saw an incredible variety of animals: orcas, humpback whales, porpoises, sea lions, eagles and bears.
Seeing so many different species during one excursion made this a particularly memorable experience for us. It was also a reminder of how much wildlife there is to discover around Vancouver Island beyond the animals visitors might initially expect to see.
Wildlife sightings can never be guaranteed, of course, and every trip is different. That unpredictability is part of what makes observing animals in their natural environment so special.

What to Know Before Booking a Whale-Watching Tour
If whale watching is on your Vancouver Island itinerary, Campbell River is worth considering as a starting point for a guided excursion.
Before booking, compare the available tours and check their duration, departure times, inclusions and wildlife-viewing policies. We also recommend choosing an operator that follows responsible wildlife-viewing practices.
June worked well for our visit, and we enjoyed excellent weather during our stay. However, conditions at sea can differ from those on land, so bring suitable layers and follow the recommendations provided by your tour operator.

Spend Time at Campbell River’s Harbour
During our stay, we also spent quite a bit of time at Campbell River’s harbour. It was a lovely contrast to our more active days exploring the trails at Elk Falls Provincial Park and heading out on the water for our whale-watching tour.
We enjoyed having time to slow down and take in the surroundings rather than filling every moment with activities. The harbour is a natural place to spend some time while visiting Campbell River and adds another side to a stay that might otherwise revolve around hiking and wildlife excursions.
For us, these quieter moments were part of what made the stop enjoyable. Campbell River wasn’t just about ticking activities off our list; it was also about having the time to appreciate the place itself.

Enjoy the Natural Surroundings of Campbell River
One of the things we enjoyed about Campbell River was being able to combine different outdoor experiences without having to travel to an entirely different destination.
Elk Falls Provincial Park offers forest scenery, waterfalls and river views, while whale watching takes you out onto the water in search of marine wildlife.
If you have more time, you can look into additional activities in and around Campbell River, depending on your interests. Options include further walks, cycling, kayaking and exploring other nearby natural areas.
We would recommend choosing activities that fit your travel style rather than trying to cover everything. For us, the combination of hiking and wildlife watching was a great way to experience the area.
If you are travelling around Vancouver Island by car, Campbell River also works well as a stop on a longer road trip. Three nights gave us time to enjoy the activities we had planned without making the stay feel rushed.
When Is the Best Time to Visit Campbell River?
We visited Campbell River in June and had fantastic weather throughout our stay. It was ideal for spending time outdoors, exploring the park trails and heading out on a whale-watching excursion.
June can be an appealing time to visit if you want to combine hiking with wildlife experiences. However, weather conditions can vary, and it is always worth checking local forecasts and tour availability before travelling.
If whale watching is one of your priorities, check the seasonal information provided by local operators and ask about the wildlife you may encounter during your travel dates.
For hiking, check current trail conditions and park advisories before setting out. This is particularly important if you are planning to explore several routes in Elk Falls Provincial Park.
Our experience in June was excellent, but we would still plan outdoor activities with some flexibility rather than relying on the weather to cooperate every day.
How Long Should You Stay in Campbell River?
We spent three nights in Campbell River, which gave us two full days to explore the area. For the activities we had planned, this worked really well.
We dedicated one full day to our whale-watching tour and another to exploring Elk Falls Provincial Park. Having a separate day for hiking meant we could take our time on the trails, enjoy the waterfall and explore the canyon viewpoints without rushing.
If your main priorities are whale watching and hiking in Elk Falls Provincial Park, we think two full days are enough to experience both. Three nights in Campbell River worked well for us, as they allowed us to enjoy these activities at a relaxed pace. Moreover, we added an extra day to be able to drive between places without rushing.
If you want to explore more of the surrounding area or add other outdoor activities, you may want to stay longer. But if you’re planning a Vancouver Island road trip and want to include the main highlights of Campbell River, two full days are a good starting point.
Practical Tips for Visiting Campbell River
A few simple considerations can help you make the most of your stay.
Allow enough time for Elk Falls Provincial Park.
The waterfall and suspension bridge are the main attractions, but there are more trails and viewpoints in the surrounding area. If you enjoy hiking, leave some time to explore beyond the main viewpoint.
Plan your whale-watching trip in advance.
Compare tour operators, departure times and trip durations before booking. If the excursion is a priority, it makes sense to plan the rest of your day around it.
Bring layers for time on the water.
Even when the weather is sunny in town, conditions on a boat can feel different. Follow your operator’s advice on what to bring.
Keep your itinerary flexible.
Outdoor activities depend on conditions, and wildlife sightings are never guaranteed. Leaving some breathing room in your schedule makes it easier to adapt your plans.
Respect the wildlife and natural environment.
Stay on designated trails, follow park signage and listen to your guide during wildlife excursions. Responsible travel helps protect the places and animals that make Vancouver Island so special.
Our Verdict: Would We Recommend Campbell River?
Absolutely. We spent three nights in Campbell River in June, and it was a great stop on our Vancouver Island road trip.
What made our stay memorable was the combination of hiking and wildlife experiences. Exploring Elk Falls Provincial Park gave us time in the forest and along the river canyon, while our whale-watching trip took us out onto the water, where we saw orcas, humpback whales, porpoises, sea lions, eagles and bears.
We also appreciated having enough time to enjoy these experiences without rushing through the area.
If you are planning a Vancouver Island road trip and enjoy independent travel, outdoor adventures and wildlife, we would definitely recommend considering Campbell River for your itinerary.
